Search Engines & Social Media – the affair continues

It’s the end of 2009. And I think we finally have something else to talk about rather than just ‘the next big thing’.  It’s not just one platform online, it’s going to be the way we draw them all together – something your digital strategist should be nailing.

Before I launch into something here, I’m going to preface this all with one thing: ask someone a question, and you’ll get an answer; observe someone’s behavior and you’ll get an insight.

The difference between answers and insights, is really the difference between traditional market research, or those online surveys, and just watching a users behavior in search engines (for e.g. I found out that the 21st most searched term on Google is “fear of ducks watching you” in the “fear of” category), and knowing that the term ‘night club’ was mentioned over 63,000 times in August alone this year (most of it in Forums).

Here are some more insights from Search Engine Room today from Experience Hitwise:

Search Engine and Social Media Statistics:

  • Australia: 11.8% of time spent on social networks, 12.8% on search engines. Both dominating largest time spent online.
  • 1% difference between search and social visits, up from 6.4% 3 years ago.
  • Google play host to 91% share of search
  • The tops searches on Google, Google Australia, Bing! and Yahoo!7 are social media terms – e.g. Facebook (overall winner), YouTube etc

I was presenting an overview of social media and search.
