Make web writing Easy to Read – Scannable Text
Wai Chim on December 10th in SEO with no comments yet :(
Time and time again, web writers tout the importance of making your web site copy “scannable” – that is making use of headings, bolded words, lists and bullet points to highlight essential pieces of information that will be important to the user.
Studies from as early as 1997, show that users do not “read” information but scan the center of the screen to find snippets that will answer their questions and help them gain a better understanding of the topic at hand. This is hardly unique to the web, textbooks have chapter summaries and bullet points that summarise the key points and most major reports are released with “Executive Summaries” for this reason.

Google Caffeine Update – Live on one Data Centre
Alex Asigno on December 1st in SEO with no comments yet :(As previously known, the latest update to Google’s algorithm, Caffeine, was expected to be trialled on one data centre before being rolled out on the entire Google Network in early January. This latest update has now been made live, you can view these results by searching from this IP 209.85.225.103. Currently, and like most Google IPs when updates happen, it isn’t always returning true Caffeine results, only about 50% of the time. Most likely this is due to the way Google reroutes requests to load balance traffic; perhaps at a later stage Google will make only Caffeine results available on this IP.
There has been conversation on webmaster forums about another Major Google update occurring, however it was confirmed by Matt Cutts over at Search Engine Roundtable that this is not the case, and it is Caffeine results that webmasters are seeing.
Politics, Porn and Payment – Search Engines in Society
Wai Chim on November 25th in SEO with 1 lonely commentThis week we learned of a possible deal being struck between Microsoft and News Corp where the software giant is speaking with Murdoch about gaining exclusive access to content and possibly trying to box out the unbeatable Google. If such a partnership is made between the two, it has the potential to not only change the search engine industry and our user experience, but how we gain access to information online.
As the web becomes the resource of choice when it comes to finding information and search engines become the predominantly preferred tool to navigate the web, what role do search engines play in society and how will that role change in the future?
