Social Media Showcase (9 July 2010)

Steven Kryger on July 9th in Social Media with no comments yet :(

A weekly wrap-up of interesting articles, resources and developments in the world of social media.

  1. Trade your dinosaur with a Dell. AdNews reports that Dell is ramping up its social media activity, centering on a Facebook page where users can upload a photo of their prehistoric laptop, with an accompanying story. (h/t Hannah Law)
  2. Earn cash for check-ins with WeReward. Gowalla, Foursquare – check-in apps are popping up all over the place. WeReward adds an extra dimension – offering cash rewards for check-ins, purchases, and completing tasks (e.g. taking a photo). Currently only available in the U.S. – could it work in Australia? Learn more about how it works for users and businesses.
  3. The Influencer Project. Described as a project to ‘find out how influential you are’, users sign-up and are provided with a custom URL that they then share with as many people as they can, and encourage them to click on. The more clicks, the more influential (so the story goes). Laurel Papworth has written a great piece on why this is a dumb idea, and how easily it can be misused.
  4. How Google works. An infographic, depicting the complex processes behind a Google search (h/t Chris Redshaw). Speaking of infographics, last week Mashable shared ‘10 beautiful social media infographics‘.
  5. Top World Cup Players on Facebook, Day by Day. Choose a day of the week, and this application will display each player in a different size, according to the percent of all Facebook status updates, wall posts, comments, shares, and likes containing the player’s name. Good idea, however, they’ve added an extra step to sharing this website on Twitter which probably isn’t necessary.

Personally Offended by Google Personalised Search

Jamie on June 30th in Internet with 5 comments

We already know that Google are a clever bunch but this week they really tipped the scales (pun intended) with their personalised search function.

There I was minding my own business, innocently going about some keyword research on the Google Keyword Tool when I got the following security check.

Charming Google, you’re not quite as lean as you used to be either!

Google Chrome Faster than a Potato

Alex Asigno on May 7th in SEO with no comments yet :(

Google’s avidly been promoting the message that they have the fastest internet browser out there; this time Google are creatively comparing Google Chrome to other really fast things such as lightning, sound waves and believe it or not flying potatoes!

Google Vs China – who wins?

Wai Chim on March 24th in News with 1 lonely comment

Farewell Google China

Well it’s finally happened. A few months back we discussed Google threatening to pull out of China and low and behold they’ve gone and done it, with the search giant officially pulling the plug on Google.cn and redirecting users to it’s uncensored Hong Kong site instead. The company is hoping to keep its development staff in China and continue its relationship, “holding out hope that the Chinese government would allow it to keep its pledge to end censorship while retaining its share of China’s fast-growing Internet search market,” says the New York Times.
Instead Chinese government officials are accusing the search engine of politicising the web by “trying to foist Western content on Chinese users.” Despite generations of censorship, more and more Chinese are looking for internet freedom in their web experience.

Right here, right now: real-time

Hannah on December 16th in Social Media with no comments yet :(
Real Time

Real Time

Consumers are increasingly looking for instant gratification, whatever form it may take: real-time reviews, status updates, breaking news on Twitter or notification of where your friends are via FourSquare. They consume and produce information as and when it happens.

In 2010, I think consumer instant gratification will be enhanced by several factors:
1. Advent of smart phones: According to Telsyte only 12% of Australians currently use a smart phone (iPhone, Blackberry etc) so it is likely that more and more Australians will turn to this type of mobile device in 2010. As they do, the amount of real-time information shared online will grow exponentially because they can now be online in the ‘real’ world.
2. Google real-time search: Last week Google announced real-time search which includes live updates from people using sites like Twitter and FriendFeed. This is a recognition from Google that this user-generated content is valuable and sought after by consumers. The feature doesn’t seem to have fully launched yet but when it does the reach and influence of these social media channels will be significantly greater and brands will need to consider the effect this may have on their reputation.
3. Google Wave: If and when it takes off properly, it will be a great tool to ceate and edit rich-media streams of information in real-time, with changes immediately visible to all participants.
4. Foursquare and Google Latitude: Once again, as more Australians adopt these technologies, the amount of real-time information available online will be phenomenal. Some users are already streaming every (un)notable event in their life through a combination of updates on Twitter, Facebook and blogs.
