Real Time

Real Time

Consumers are increasingly looking for instant gratification, whatever form it may take: real-time reviews, status updates, breaking news on Twitter or notification of where your friends are via FourSquare. They consume and produce information as and when it happens.

In 2010, I think consumer instant gratification will be enhanced by several factors:
1. Advent of smart phones: According to Telsyte only 12% of Australians currently use a smart phone (iPhone, Blackberry etc) so it is likely that more and more Australians will turn to this type of mobile device in 2010. As they do, the amount of real-time information shared online will grow exponentially because they can now be online in the ‘real’ world.
2. Google real-time search: Last week Google announced real-time search which includes live updates from people using sites like Twitter and FriendFeed. This is a recognition from Google that this user-generated content is valuable and sought after by consumers. The feature doesn’t seem to have fully launched yet but when it does the reach and influence of these social media channels will be significantly greater and brands will need to consider the effect this may have on their reputation.
3. Google Wave: If and when it takes off properly, it will be a great tool to ceate and edit rich-media streams of information in real-time, with changes immediately visible to all participants.
4. Foursquare and Google Latitude: Once again, as more Australians adopt these technologies, the amount of real-time information available online will be phenomenal. Some users are already streaming every (un)notable event in their life through a combination of updates on Twitter, Facebook and blogs.

Politics, Porn and Payment – Search Engines in Society

Wai Chim on November 25th in SEO with 1 lonely comment

This week we learned of a possible deal being struck between Microsoft and News Corp where the software giant is speaking with Murdoch about gaining exclusive access to content and possibly trying to box out the unbeatable Google. If such a partnership is made between the two, it has the potential to not only change the search engine industry and our user experience, but how we gain access to information online.

As the web becomes the resource of choice when it comes to finding information and search engines become the predominantly preferred tool to navigate the web, what role do search engines play in society and how will that role change in the future?

Ad Sitelinks

The Inside AdWords crew announced the launch of a new feature today which allows AdWords advertisers to add links to four additional landing pages within each Adwords ad (see screenshot of sample ad above). According to the Inside AdWords crew, the ad site links will improve the search experience by “providing users with more options within each ad”.

The process is pretty clear and straight forward for current AdWords users. Follow the easy steps in order to use the new site links feature:

Social Search – this weeks developments

twitter-cash

I read an interesting article from Justin Scarborough in the latest issue of Search Marketing Trends which I thought was a good snapshot of the recent developments in the last week. Both Bing and Google have announced deals with Twitter, who will share real-time tweets, with each major search engine. I wanted to share the article with you and get your thoughts. To me, it appears Twitter will finally make some money, while search engines can begin to incorporate real time data in their search results.

Justin’s article is below:

AdWords Tips for Small Businesses

Rattan Muttoo on October 19th in Pay Per Click (PPC) with 1 lonely comment

Small Biz

A great article in the NY Times mentions some useful tips on how Google AdWords can offer local businesses the opportunity to expand their reach past their local suburb or town. While it mentions some good tips for getting started with AdWords, there are also some pitfalls that every small business should be aware of when starting an AdWords campaign.

NY Times AdWords Tip 1: Set a budget, a daily or monthly amount you’re willing to spend.
This is definitely a crucial stumbling block for a number of small business owners as they are unsure of what returns they will be able to generate from AdWords. I certainly recommend implementing a scaled approach for small businesseses – start small – check results – then expand.
