There has been a lot of discussion recently about what news will look like in 2010, especially with Murdoch announcing he will begin charging for some NewsCorp content. I wanted to throw a few ideas around about how I think it will continue to evolve – feel free to disagree!

Right here, right now: real-time

Real Time

Real Time

Consumers are increasingly looking for instant gratification, whatever form it may take: real-time reviews, status updates, breaking news on Twitter or notification of where your friends are via FourSquare. They consume and produce information as and when it happens.

In 2010, I think consumer instant gratification will be enhanced by several factors:
1. Advent of smart phones: According to Telsyte only 12% of Australians currently use a smart phone (iPhone, Blackberry etc) so it is likely that more and more Australians will turn to this type of mobile device in 2010. As they do, the amount of real-time information shared online will grow exponentially because they can now be online in the ‘real’ world.
2. Google real-time search: Last week Google announced real-time search which includes live updates from people using sites like Twitter and FriendFeed. This is a recognition from Google that this user-generated content is valuable and sought after by consumers. The feature doesn’t seem to have fully launched yet but when it does the reach and influence of these social media channels will be significantly greater and brands will need to consider the effect this may have on their reputation.
3. Google Wave: If and when it takes off properly, it will be a great tool to ceate and edit rich-media streams of information in real-time, with changes immediately visible to all participants.
4. Foursquare and Google Latitude: Once again, as more Australians adopt these technologies, the amount of real-time information available online will be phenomenal. Some users are already streaming every (un)notable event in their life through a combination of updates on Twitter, Facebook and blogs.

Results from the Foursquare poll

Did a quick poll this morning around should Twitter notifications from Foursquare be turned off? Seems 39 of the nearly 50 respondents voted in yes. Not sure if this means we should all turn them off straight away, but interesting never the less.

Would really like to hear any of your opinions about the service and it’s affect on existing Twitter accounts etc.

Social Search – this weeks developments

twitter-cash

I read an interesting article from Justin Scarborough in the latest issue of Search Marketing Trends which I thought was a good snapshot of the recent developments in the last week. Both Bing and Google have announced deals with Twitter, who will share real-time tweets, with each major search engine. I wanted to share the article with you and get your thoughts. To me, it appears Twitter will finally make some money, while search engines can begin to incorporate real time data in their search results.

Justin’s article is below:

How Many Twitter Followers

Andy Jamieson on October 27th in Social Media with 3 comments

Top Twitter Followers

Does more = better?

It currently takes over 3.6 m followers to make the Twitter Top 3 most popular twitter users list. As I write this, Switched on Media has 2346 and we’re gaining about 20-30 followers a day. At this rate, in order for us to be listed on the Twitter Top list, it would take about…328 YEARS for us to overtake Ellen!

This gets me thinking, does having more followers really make twitter better for the account holders?

Social Media Monitoring & Analytics from Twitter

Interesting to look at what the social networks themselves are planning around social media monitoring.

Twitter is said to be planning an ‘analytics dashboard’ for companies that want to track tweets relating to their business.
